Growing up in a home filled with music and the public’s love of his Dad’s piano playing, provided the young teenager with a valuable head start, and that led to his winning Billboard Magazine’s International Songwriting Competition its first two years, among many other competitions. Music publishers and recording companies started picking up his material, and in the early 1980's Rick met and teamed up with Larry Thompson. They enjoyed some successes during the next decade with covers by Tower of Power singer, Lenny Williams and the first Star Search Grand Champion, Catte Adams, among others. They also had a swack of major ‘holds’ that never made it to final vinyl.
