A Hat Named Jack

Story Behind The Song

I was a DJ that landed a job doing a midnight show that allowed me the flexibility of experimenting and developing a comedy routine. With rapid success indicated by Arbitron ratings jumping from 0% market share, to 25%, I began looking for career advancement. I landed a job interview with the program director that hired Rick Dees in North Carolina. This inspired me to write a novelty song. At this time, I was wearing a cowboy had that I had named Jack that got wet in a light rain. So, I imagined the story line, wrote the song, rewrote it polished it, played it on the radio and received multiple requests to play it again and eventually everything else feel in place.

Song Description

A playful and whimsical country story-song that brings a unique sense of humor to the classic cowboy narrative. It follows the adventures of a cowboy who, while once riding the range and living the free-spirited cowboy life, finds an unexpected companion in his hat, Jack. More than just a hat, Jack becomes a character in his own right--sometimes a loyal friend, sometimes a mischievous troublemaker. Through clever wordplay and comical situations, the song explores the highs and lows of life with Jack: from the hat's vibrant adventures on the cowboy's head to its less glamorous days after a storm leaves it battered and incapable of performing. The lyrics balance absurdity with heart, portraying a quirky friendship that's both humorous and oddly touching. With a catchy chorus, colorful imagery, and a lighthearted tone, A Hat Named Jask is a country-comedy track that celebrates the small, silly, and endearing things that make life memorable--like a hat named Jack. It's perfect for fans of humorous country storytelling who enjoy songs that are as clever as they are entertaining.

Lyrics

I used to be a cowboy
Just riding on the range
Had my yippee I ohs
But can't disclose everything
I bought me a hat
A real cowboy hat
But like my soda pop ...
It went flat.

Chorus:
I got a hat named Jack
As a matter of fact
He used to be brown
But I painted him black
And I threw him away
But one day he came back
All I got to say is...
You're a good hat Jack.

Jack's a good a friend
As a friend can be
He helps me to hide
When I'm too blind to see
He's oh such a cowboy
Riding on my head
But he's oh such a bad boy ...
When he's in my bed.

Repeat chorus

Jack almost died
In a terrible storm
Now he can't hold his brim,
And he can't perform
He's just sort of there
Like a rag on my hair
People point and say ....
Golley lookie there.

Repeat chorus
